Thanks for visiting a small selection of my favorite landscape photographs. I share a passion for chasing waterfalls, moons and suns among my Nature Photographs. I shoot in a number of San Francisco Bay Area locations including Yosemite. Attempting to capture the light to create the moment when I was there is what I hope to accomplish. Please drop me an email or leave a comment below. Thanks for stopping in! I also have a Facebook Fan located here: http://www.facebook.com/pages/Yosemite-and-Bay-Area-Nature-Photography-by-John-Harrison/190152125697

John Harrison Photography > “Nature’s Firefall” is a rare photograph of Horsetail Falls in Yosemite at Sunset in winter by John Harrison http://www.jharrisonphoto.com. This is nature’s version of the old man-made Yosemite Fire Fall. During the winter in Yosemite, coming off of El Capitan, there is an almost non-existent waterfall called “Horsetail Falls.” Many maps don’t even have it marked. During the last two weeks in February, IF there is water trickling over the edge, and IF it is clear at sunset (which doesn’t happen too often due to the winter storms) the setting sun will turn this waterfall into a stream of molten fire. The waterfall lights up like molten lava due to the angle of the sun. Inspired by Galen Rowell, many photographers have chased this elusive photo opportunity. John spent two evenings in a foot of snow in the middle of meadow trying to get the shot. The first evening was an absolute bust as it had been clear all day and at sunset the clouds hung over the peak. Luckily he captured his photograph titled “Full Moon over Half Dome”. The next evening everything worked out for this stunning shot.

I am debuting this week my latest images from my award winning trip to Yosemite. My Yosemite images can be seen here. Let me know which ones you like! Thanks, John

My people look at my image and think it is the old man-made firewall where they DID push a burning fire and coals over the edge. A great website with pictures and the story of the original fire fall can be seen here: http://firefall.info
John Harrison Photography > "Mist in Cooks Meadow in Yosemite" From my photo shoot this past week with the fall colors and backlit leaves as the sun is rising over the peak. The mist in Cooks Meadow and the fall colors was just tranquil! I found the backlit leaves
and curvy branches twisting with the leaves! Did you find the hidden treasure in the top left of the photo?! Half Dome is tucked in the trees. Enjoy! John Copyright John Harrison Photography
John Harrison Photography > "Above the Fog" I love shots of San Francisco and the Golden Gate Bridge but never had gotten the perfect shot with the Golden Gate Bridge poking through the fog. I saw the weather report at 11:30pm the evening before saying "your commute will be slow in the morning with low lying fog across the Golden Gate Bridge" I thought PERFECT! I'll head up in a few hours! I set out in the dark for the drive up to San Francisco to shoot from the Marin Headlands.

The hike up the hill in the dark and the fog with too much camera gear (30 pounds!) gave me a great early morning workout! I arrived just as the sky was starting to have an amazing glow and the fog was swirling beneath the bridge. I decided to go for a longer exposure to capture the lights of the cars heading to the Golden Gate Bridge. On the right side of the photo you can see some cars heading along Conzelman Road. I just love the curves and swirling fog together with the bumps in the hillside. It only took me a month to process my image :-)

The glow of the San Francisco lights, Car lights and Golden Gate Bridge and colors in the sky balanced with the greens of the hill and fog are what caught my eye. I went for a 1:2 panorama format for this which will look great above a fireplace, couch or in an executive boardroom printed 30" x 60" or larger!

This a single shot from the Nikon D800, Nikon 28-70mm f/2.8 lens (28mm), 30 seconds, f/13 and ISO 200. This is processed in Lightroom 4 and post processing in Adobe Photoshop CS6. I did not bring my Singh-ray neutral density filters on this trip but used the awesome digital ND filters in LR4 - my favorite feature of LR4!

It is always a crap shoot as it can be clear in the Southbay down in Sunnyvale where I live and how the fog is in San Francisco. Sometimes the fog is higher up and obscures everything and never clears! That is part of the joy, frustration and chase of great photographs - the weather and lighting will NEVER be the same!!! (but meeting cool people when you are out is another great benefit!)

I'll be showing this print at my open house coming up May 11th and 12th in Sunnyvale. Contact me for more information!! Copyright John Harrison Photography www.jharrisonphoto.com

Here is a fantastic quote from one of my followers that I really love! "••••• John you took the picture with your magic mind and hand and you made San Francisco the place where the angels live..........."
John Harrison Photography > "Summer Sunrise at Eagle Falls, Lake Tahoe" Just beautiful silky water flowing over the falls with my wide angle lens to capture the sunrise and the falls! (The wide angle is a 10-20mm on a 1.5x crop sensor currently). A couple images combined to keep the sky from blowing out and getting the right detail in the water. Shot with a 3-stop Singh-Ray Daryl Benson Reverse Neutral Density Graduated filter to hold the sun from blowing out on the horizon.
John Harrison Photography > Late afternoon along the Na Pali Coast in Kauai. I chartered a Helicopter in Kauai in hopes of getting THIS shot! 6 schedules due to changing weather and 3 passes along the Na Pali Coast and I got the shot I was looking for! Some amazing colors like the deep blue in the water, the green and red cliffs and the incredible folds along the cliffs! Just flying back and forth for a few hours over Kauai with the doors off in an R-22 (small) helicopter! Aerial Photograph of the Na' Pali Coast captured from a Helicopter in Kauai. Aerial Photography in Kauai is fantastic!
John Harrison Photography > "Burney Falls at Sunset" Burney Falls State Park has been on my list of awesome waterfalls to visit for a while! I had the chance to go at the last minute and we caught it just as the sun was setting! Quite the roar from the falls. It is a spring fed falls moving over 100 million gallons per day!! It was hard to get a sense of just how large it is at 129 feet tall and twice as wide. In the summer it must be quite the swimming hole! Burney Falls State Park is about an hour East of Mt Shasta and should be added to the California must see list! More info is here on the state park website. Enjoy! http://www.parks.ca.gov/?page_id=455 Copyright John Harrison Photography
John Harrison Photography > "Lunar Eclipse over the Golden Gate" I went out at sunrise this morning not sure what to expect! What an awesome sight! The Lunar Eclipse continued to change. The blue skies at sunrise with the red moon overhead were just a sight to watch! It disappeared into the fog just minutes after I shot this! It was worth the 3am start to our fun shooting! My image made the cover of MSNBC’s web site! Thanks for viewing my images! John Harrison Photography > "Spring Waterfalls at Mt Tam" This was an amazing hike right after the heavy rains at Cataract Falls in Mt Tam, north of San Francisco. We don't get much rain here in the SF Bay Area, but when we do, it can be amazing! Lush green moss with flowing creeks and trees everywhere! Please share the photo if you like it! I'll post a link to the trail as it is another beautiful place to be for a hike here in the Bay Area!
John Harrison Photography > "Sunset from the Many Glacier Lodge" Glacier National Park, Swiftcurrent Lake. Many Glacier Hotel From this summer with the calm lake and the reflections on the lake. Those canoes couldn't have been put in a better spot! Just sipping a cocktail and enjoying the view - it was stormy and whitecaps on the lake the previous evening! — at Glacier National Park.
John Harrison Photography > "12 Apostles at Sunset" Great Ocean Road, Victoria, Australia. The 12 Apostles has been at the top of my bucket list ever since seeing images of this amazing place! I had a business trip to Australia this summer and managed to head down the Great Ocean road (on the other side of the road!!) to capture this. I went during mid-day to scout and came back for fantastic sunset. I just 'found' my images again and finally published this one. I hope you enjoy it and add it to your list of amazing places to go! You can see the location via Google Maps here: http://g.co/maps/g4w9d

John Harrison Photography > "Gates of the Valley in Spring" Valley View, Yosemite National Park. This is the last stop before you leave the Yosemite Valley area and I stop every time! Awesome views of El Capitain and Bridalviel Falls while the Merced River is flowing by. Just surround by a peaceful setting with a few clouds and green all around.
John Harrison Photography > "Cypress and Moon at Dusk" The Cypress trees were just beautiful in silhouette at dusk after the sun went down. The nice glow of the orange and blue/purple sky and the hint of a moon up above. This was captured along the California Coastline near McWay Falls in Julia Pfeiffer Burns State Park near Big Sur. Copyright John Harrison Photography
John Harrison Photography > "Reflections of Yosemite Falls in the Merced" Yosemite National Park, California. Summer waterfalls were still raging this year in July. You normally don't see Yosemite Falls like this in July. Nice reflections of Yosemite Falls in the Merced River.
