    Thanks for visiting a small selection of my favorite landscape photographs. I share a passion for chasing waterfalls, moons and suns among my Nature Photographs. I shoot in a number of San Francisco Bay Area locations including Yosemite. Attempting to capture the light to create the moment when I was there is what I hope to accomplish.     John Harrison Photography > “Nature’s Firefall” is a rare photograph of Horsetail Falls in Yosemite at Sunset in winter. This is nature’s version of the old man-made Yosemite Fire Fall.During the winter in Yosemite, coming off of El Capitan, there is an almost non-existent waterfall called “Horsetail Falls.” Many maps don’t even have it marked. During the last two weeks in February, IF there is water trickling over the edge, and IF it is clear at sunset (which doesn’t happen too often due to the winter storms) the setting sun will turn this waterfall into a stream of molten fire. The waterfall lights up like molten lava due to the angle of the sun. Inspired by Galen Rowell, many photographers have chased this elusive photo opportunity. John spent two evenings in a foot of snow in the middle of meadow trying to get the shot. The first evening was an absolute bust as it had been clear all day and at sunset the clouds hung over the peak. Luckily he captured his photograph titled “Full Moon over Half Dome”. The next evening everything worked out for this stunning shot. I am debuting this week my latest images from my award winning trip to Yosemite. My Yosemite images can be seen here.     John Harrison Photography > 12/2. Royal National Park in Australia at Sunset. I captured this during my fantastic business trip to Australia where I managed to get out to take a few pictures as well. This was one of my FAVORITE locations! One of my friends, Matt, who lives in Sydney took me out there. It rained on us, was hot and sunny and then the sunset was just fantastic! I couldn't have asked for anything more. I was definitely having a little TOO much fun as I kept shooting past sun down... and the tide kept coming UP!! We made it back around cove without any problems! I just finished processing this today for my first time -- let me know what you think.
    John Harrison Photography > "Summer Wildflowers at Sparks Lake", near Mt Bachelor and Bend Oregon. I made 3 trips up to Sparks Lake to scout and check out the Ray Atkeson trail (famous Oregon Landscape Photographer.) The first time was totally socked in with fog and the second was mid-day with the family so you generally call these "scouting trips" Well, I saw this GREAT patch of wildflower out on a island 100 feet across from the shore. I had talked with Marc Adamus who also mentioned that he had spied those as well. So, I headed up for a third trip and brought my waders. I thought it would only be a few feet deep since I could see the bottom - Nope... I had water up to my chest while carrying all my camera gear!! One little slip and my gear was soaked (don't tell my wife this!) I got to the island and found this great patch of flowers just off the very tip of the island. I balanced my tripod precariously on a few rocks and brought out my 10-20mm lens to capture this. It was well worth the effort to wade out to this island an get the shot! I really nice different shot from a pretty famous place.
    John Harrison Photography > "Reflections of El Capitan at Sunset" Yosemite National Park. The sunlit El Capitan at Sunset on the reflected on the Merced. I am excited to announce that my "Reflections of El Capitan at Sunset" has been accepted into a prestigious gallery exhibit in Yosemite! No, not the Ansel Adams gallery (not yet!), but an exhibit called the "Yosemite Renaissance" This was one of my major goals this past year and I got in! The sunlit El Capitan at sunset is reflected on the Merced. I shot this during my national contest winning trip last year (I won the Aperture Nature Photography contest) where I got to shoot with 4 professionals including Scott Bourne, Jennifer Wu, Steve Simon and Gary Hamburgh. If you are in Yosemite in the next few months, stop in and visit the exhibit at the Yosemite Museum Gallery through May 2nd. There is also a reception this Friday, Feb 26th that I will be attending if you are close by! If you would like one of these limited edition images, they are for sale. This competition and juried exhibit is open to professional and amateur artists and they had a record number of entries this year. Only a few photographers were accepted. Some other famous Yosemite photographers that have exhibited there include Charlie Cramer, Michael Frye (both of whom I have studied under), William Neill and Elizabeth Carmel. http://www.yosemiterenaissance.org/index.html About the image: Blue skies are normally not too interesting, so I looked around to find a smaller, more interesting composition. The reflected orange glow from El Cap just lit up the Merced and I found this soothing image (this is one of my favorite images!) The gold and blue are a natural combination that go together with the swirls and flows like an abstract painting. I print this large on canvas and most people can't tell if this is a painting or a photograph.     John Harrison Photography > Northlake at Sunrise 0374. Shooting Fall Colors with Jennifer Wu's Fall colors workshop out of Bishop. The lake was perfectly still with the vibrant colors of the sun peaking on the mountains. This fantastic log was reaching out into the lake with the nice relection.
    John Harrison Photography > All Quiet on The Great Wall. Badaling Section. For my visit to Beijing, I had a fantastic guide who managed to get me access to the Great Wall BEFORE it opened to the public! He asked me why I wanted to leave so early?! Now he knows why! This is one of the most visited and popular sections of the wall to visit and I am glad I was able to enjoy it with NO ONE THERE! (Sprinting to the top with a 30 pound camera pack was a little challenge!) I have another image 180 degrees the other direction also with no people - it is amazing how far the wall extends. This is the way a treasure like this is supposed to be enjoyed!
    John Harrison Photography > "Sunset on Half Dome from Glacier Point" Some nice color in the summer sky with clouds above Clouds Rest and Nevada and Vernal Falls. It was uncertain if we were going to get a good sunset as high clouds hid the sun from penetrating through. These last glimpses were at dusk as the sky started to light up. This is one of those places I want to be on a Friday afternoon!
    John Harrison Photography > Aspen Leaves Fall Down by The Creek. I found this group of fall leaves down on the rocks in the creek bed. The water rushing by and the fall colors made this just a perfect place to hang out. They had to pull me away or I would have been here for hours! 0768
    John Harrison Photography > Fullmoon over Half Dome. Yosemite in Winter. This was my 'consolation' shot while trying to capture my "Nature's Firefalls" rare image of Horsetail falls at sunset. I wish that I could say that I had fully researched this shot and was ready for it. Instead, I was coming back from another failed attempt to capture my Nature's Firefalls image. When I came around the corner, the moon was sitting there!! I stopped my car, setup my tripod in the middle of the road (please don't tell the park rangers I did that as it isn't a good idea!) I captured 4 shots before the moon and Half Dome were totally obscured by the clouds! I was pretty lucky to capture this - but that is part of photography.     John Harrison Photography > Bixby Bridge at Big Sur. This is one of those shots of the California coastline that reminds me why I love to be here. Rolling hills, the ocean and a beautiful curved bridge. This is just North of Big Sur and is a definite place to stop and get some pictures. Fog often shrouds the coastline and winter storms are dramatic crashing on the rocks below. Enjoy! John
    John Harrison Photography > "The Brides Red Veil" Yosemite National Park. "Water, Light and Textures" series. I was shooting all along the lower parts of Bridal Veil Falls and stumbled upon this stunning red rock. I worked the area for an hour playing with different compositions and shutter speeds. My love of flowing water and the different ways you can capture it has always excited me. I finally found this streaking water coming off the rock at the optimum angle and used the camera settings to have the camera use the water as “paint” to get these long flowing streaks. It reminds me of a brides veil. This image is available as a canvas giclée gallery wrap in sizes 16"x24", 20"x30", 28"x42" and 38"x58"
    John Harrison Photography > Ring of Fire at Sunset. Royal National Park, near Sydney Australia. After an amazing day of rain, sun, clouds and a great sunset, the 'symphony' of the sunset continued to play as the sun kept dropping. The entire sky started to glow and a pink ring of fire lit up. What a fantastic way to end a day!
    John Harrison Photography > 11/12 Galen's Arch at Alabama Hills in the Eastern Sierra. We were shooting at sunrise packed all around the Mobius Arch otherwise known as Galen's Arch for the Galen Rowell who made it famous. I was excited to have met John Shaw who was quietly shooting there with us. Just another fantastic place to be.
    John Harrison Photography > "Heart over Horsetail Falls" Yosemite National Park. Sunset Spring 2009. I captured this during another outing to capture Horsetail Falls. The water flow over the falls was pretty low this winter. As I was shooting I noticed the winds picking up. Some gusts picked up the trickle of the falls and it puffed up like a cloud - the sun shining on the mist and I froze this moment. This year was almost non-existent for capturing any good Horsetail Falls pictures since it was cloudy and snowing much of February this year - I guess that is what makes this such a hard picture to take since the window for good images is only a few weeks.     John Harrison Photography > The “Lone Surfer at Natural Bridges” was captured on a winter day at Sunset. The waves were strong, and the sunset was beautiful. There was one surfer that I caught dreaming about hitting the waves one last time before the sunlight totally disappeared. This location is a beautiful cove and has endless amounts of places to photograph. In the spring, school children frequent this location on field trips to see the monarch butterflies.
